Sandblast Lettering and Designs

Sandblasting has been the preferred method of lettering and engraving memorials from the late 1920’s through today. A special stencil is cut and applied to the surface of the stone to allow the pressurized air and abrasive mixture to engrave letters, numbers, flowers and images.

Both light and dark colors of polished granite can be beautifully engraved by sandblast. The lighter colors of granite, including grays and pinks, are almost always sandblasted to provide a deep finished cut and the best visual look.

Sandblast Lettering

There are many different fonts available to choose from, although a regular “Modified Roman” letter is still the most popular and traditional choice. Even duplicating someone’s personal handwriting or signature can also be accomplished.

Sandblast Sunk Letters in Frosted Panel

A deeply cut sandblast letter “Shadows” when engraved into polished granite. The letter needs contrast around it to be easily seen. We make a frosted panel around the letters to provide contrast. We recommend that on the lighter colors of granite, including Barre Gray and Mt. Rose, this type of lettering should be used to show up best.

Skin Frosted Letters Without Frosted Panel

On darker colors of granite, frosted letters can be used without the use of panels. Keep in mind these letters are not cut deep and since they do not “Shadow“ like a deep cut letter, the frosted panel is not required for them to look their best.

Frosted Outline Letters

Also an excellent choice and can be used on all colors of granite. The letters are frosted in the center to provide contrast; however there is also a deeper cut sandblast line which goes around both the inner and outer edges giving it a sharper distinct finish. This letter is a little more expensive due to the extra steps required to sandblast it.

  * All of these sandblast lettering choices and others can be discussed when speaking with us directly to design your memorial.

Sandblast Designs

Shaped Sandblast Carving

Shaped carving is a double process sandblast technique which gives more dimensions to a carving design. It allows flowers and leaves to have a realistic look to them.

Flat Sandblasted Carving

Just as the name implies, the carvings are left flat. That does not mean they have to be plain. Some carvings need to be done as flat to give the best completed results. Designs such as emblems, logos, crosses and birds are commonly flat carved.

  * Keep in mind that that many other monument dealers utilize flat carvings as their norm.

Deep Cultured Sandblast Roses

Our deep cultured roses have an incredible real-life like look to them. The bottom photo to the right shows how beautiful a granite rose can be. This is a 3 step process which lends incredible detail to the rose. Our main manufacturer offers one of the best cultured roses in the industry.

  * When looking at other monument dealer’s roses, be sure to compare theirs to ours. The differences can be dramatic.
